How Below Grade Mulching Works

Image of a trail made by the direct drive Coneteks Subsoil Mulcher by going below grade 8-10 inches to mulch, grind, and bury trees from standing, root systems, stumps, brush, and debris, finishing by leaving a clean finish.

Mulch, Bury, and Finish in One Integrated Process

Below grade mulching is one of the most effective ways to transform overgrown, uneven, root heavy ground into clean, enriched, work ready soil. The process goes deeper than traditional surface mulching by targeting the material beneath the surface that causes regrowth, instability, and long‑term maintenance issues.

Our direct drive subsoil mulcher is engineered specifically for this type of work. It reaches 8–10 inches below grade, allowing operators to take down brush, stumps, and small trees up to 6 inches in diameter, then turn everything into a below‑grade mulch layer that enriches the soil and prepares the ground for the next phase of any project.

What Makes Below Grade Mulching So Effective?

Below grade mulching removes the root systems and buried debris that surface level mulchers leave behind. This deeper approach delivers several advantages:

  • Eliminates regrowth at the source
  • Creates a smoother, more stable surface
  • Improves soil quality by blending organic material into the ground
  • Reduces cleanup, hauling, and follow up passes
  • Prepares land for construction, planting, trails, food plots, and more

The result is a cleaner, healthier, more usable piece of land with far fewer steps.

How Our Subsoil Mulcher Achieves Below Grade Results

Our direct drive model is designed to perform the entire workflow in one integrated process. The rotor, controller, and front roller work together to mulch, bury, and finish the ground with precision and consistency.

Forward Pass: Mulch and Bury Below Grade

The rotor works 8–10 inches deep to break down:

  • Brush
  • Root systems
  • Stumps
  • Standing trees up to 6 inches in diameter
  • Buried debris

The front roller plays a key role by holding down brush and standing trees, keeping material engaged with the rotor so it can be fully processed and buried. This ensures the debris is not left on the surface and does not return as regrowth.

Why the Limit Is “Up to 6 Inches”

The 6‑inch guideline is based on real‑world conditions:

  • Tool carriers often lack the pushing force needed to take down larger trees.
  • Dedicated forestry machines can push larger trees, although the mulch volume becomes too great to bury effectively.
  •  Large trees create a significant amount of material, and even when mixed with soil, the mass has nowhere to go below grade.

Below‑grade mulching works best when the material can be fully processed and buried. The 6 inch limit ensures the process remains efficient, clean, and consistent.

Second Pass: Smooth and Finish the Surface

Once the material is mulched and buried, the operator reverses hydraulic flow, lowers the front roller, and lightly back drags. The rotor turns in reverse with the teeth barely touching the surface.

This finishing step:

  • Levels the ground
  • Compacts the soil
  • Blends mulch into the top layer
  • Leaves a clean, smooth, even finish

The land is immediately ready for seeding, planting, construction, food plots, trails, or any next step.

Why Below Grade Mulching Matters for Projects

Below grade mulching is ideal for anyone who needs a complete land prep solution. It is especially valuable for:

  • Clearing overgrown areas
  • Preparing food plots
  • Creating trails and access paths
  • Reclaiming pasture or fields
  • Improving soil health
  • Preparing ground for new builds
  • Managing forestry and land improvement projects

The process eliminates extra steps, reduces equipment needs, and delivers a finished surface that is ready for use.

Below grade mulching offers a powerful combination of depth, efficiency, and soil improvement. Our direct drive subsoil mulcher brings this process together in one integrated workflow that mulches, buries, and finishes the ground with remarkable consistency. The result is clean, enriched, work ready soil that supports the next phase of any project.
